Mosquitoes

In Language Arts, each one of the students in my class had to present a talk much like a TED talk. I chose to talk about mosquitoes. Most people don’t like talking or looking at mosquitoes because they are really vile creatures. I will give a less lengthy explanation about mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are very interesting creatures behind the mysterious itch mosquitoes leave on your skin. There is much to learn about. My mosquito project was not about grossing people out. I simply wanted to explore and teach people about the iceberg of mosquitoes. The interesting thing about mosquitoes is that you might never see them because they are so small, they live pretty short lives, and they do their job of getting your blood pretty fast. Mosquitoes are one of the most dangerous animals in the world. They bring meaning to the belief that size doesn’t matter. Mosquitoes are so deadly. Not because of the size of the average mosquito. Because of the disease, the mosquito carries.

Mosquitoes can carry diseases like West Nile Virus, Dengue fever, Malaria, Yellow fever, Zika Virus, and the list goes on, and on. Depending on the mosquito, the disease it carries differs. That’s not all, depending on where you live you might meet different mosquitoes. You might experience a less deadly mosquito with fewer diseases or vice versa.

Luckily, I have never experienced a deadly virus or disease from a mosquito. But I bet we all have experienced a mosquito bite. The itchy red bump comes from the mosquito’s saliva which happens to come in contact with the victim while the mosquito is doing its job. I hope I taught you a little about mosquitoes. Bye!!

My Tree Book

In Language Arts, one of the really big projects my class was tasked with was making a tree book. Tree books are exactly what they sound like. Books that look like trees.

To make my tree book I had to make the bases of the tree book and then add to it. For example, I added newspaper, pictures, and leaves along with paint to add a cool background. I especially can’t forget the tree parts. I added tree branches to my book to make it look like a tree. To go along with my already good-looking tree book I added writing to the book. I wrote a life list, a poem related to covid, and another piece of writing called my roots about my grandpa. Eventually, my class’s books would be put into an art gallery. Before the books would be viewed in an art gallery we could show them off to family members. 

One of the best parts about this project is that my class got a professional art teacher to show us how to build the books. I don’t even want to imagine how much glue and newspaper we used. The bookmaking was a really interesting experience. I learned a lot about the color because of what the professional art teacher was telling me. I already love art so I actually enjoyed this project more than I expected I would. I am close to the end of the school year and it is good to do a fun project before school is over. Ending school on a good note is better than ending on a bad one. The summer is almost here. I just have to wait for school to end. Not that I don’t enjoy school. Stocks

Stocks, the twisted and ever-changing stocks. The thing that keeps people up at night, all night. Why do people work on stocks? Is it worth it? Well yes. People can possibly make millions of dollars investing and selling stocks. As I said earlier, the stock market is ever-changing. A share trader, someone who works with stocks, watches stocks like a hawk. Lucky for me I got to become a share trader.

 

In Language Arts, my class and many other 6th grade classes did a stock market project. Each person had 20,000 (fake dollars) to spend. Each student could pick six companies to invest their money in. One important exception to being a share trader is that every student couldn’t trade stock. Every student couldn’t trade stock because it would make the stock project so much more complicated for the classes. We used google sheets as a place to record gains and losses which everyone would lastly put on a company card. Here are the stocks I invested in and why.

 

I invested in The Walt Disney because sometimes the business makes movies that draw lots of money. I invested in Apple because Apple makes products a ton of people buy. I invested in The Boeing Company because the company was on the main page of the app stocks. I invested in Starbucks because it came to mind when I thought of where people spend money. I invested in Nike because tons of people, and athletes, shop from Nike. Lastly, I invested in Kroger because I thought people would buy important things in Kroger.

 

With all of these stocks combined, by May 12, I had lost $3544.61. I had lost a lot of (fake) money. One valuable lesson I have learned from stocks is that you might lose tons of money. However, if you do research about where money is being put and why you might have a chance at getting rich. I never did any research on my investments. This project was actually inspired by a character from the book The Westing Game who is obsessed with stocks. The character’s name is Turtle and she uses stocks to get money in the story. One really fun thing that went along with this project was the company card. Every student in my class made a card for their earnings that derived from their data from their sheets. Along with the data everyone got to make a picture and name for their company. I have a picture of my card above. My company is called The Route To Go. I really enjoyed the stock project. I don’t know yet who has made the most money out of every class. I have a final photo of the big process of my stocks if you want to see more detail. It is above just like the company card. All I know is that I am never going to invest in stocks until I know what I’m doing.

The Planetarium



On Wednesday, April 27th, 2022, the whole 6th grade went on a very fascinating field trip to the planetarium. There, we went to various places and learned about science from mosquitos to fungi, to dangerous diseases. 

Although there were many sights to see, there were two specific parts of the show that were really cool. One part featured a really eye-catching experiment. The experiment was about how different types of materials interact with electricity. For the experiment, the scientist used a machine that generated electricity. When it generates electricity the contraption would shoot the material up. There is a picture above showing one material being shot. Depending on the material, the height the material could reach would vary. Some materials even reached the roof. In the other part of the show, a scientist taught us about liquid nitrogen. The scientist tested the liquid nitrogen on many materials. My favorite is a poor, poor, balloon named Bob. To the whole grade’s excitement, Bob ended up not popping and ended up being okay. Well semi-okay. Bob most likely had a very bad cold. I don’t have a picture of Bob, but I have a picture of the liquid nitrogen being poured, as you can see above. The best thing about the experiment was that I was in the front. I could get the best view. The scientists specifically told us to not touch anything even if it was near us. Every student in my section of the trip didn’t touch anything or get hurt. That’s a plus for me. 

The last time I had a field trip was in fourth grade. I really enjoyed the field trip. I wish we could go again. It was also fun eating lunch with my friends at the planetarium. I enjoyed every second of the planetarium.

Wisdom Tale Comics

 

 

In LA we learned about different types of tales, where they came from, the origin of stories, and much more. Wisdom tales are one category of stories that we really focused on. Wisdom tales are tales that teach you a lesson. The picture above has to do with one wisdom tale in particular, The Paca and the Beetle. This tale is about how a beetle is overlooked by a paca. The paca mocks the beetle because of how slow the beetle is. A parrot had a bright idea to have a race. The winner would get a coat. The paca was excited because he only had a bland brown coat, the beetle also was up for a new shiny coat. The race started and the paca took off fast. But the paca soon realized the beetle is way slower than him and started to slow down. Eventually when the paca slowly got to the finish line the beetle was waiting there. The beetle won because he had wings that allowed him to fly. The paca called it cheating. The parrot explained why the beetle won fair and square to the angered paca. The paca had underestimated the beetle. The beetle went home with a brand new sparkling coat and the paca went home with nothing but his bland brown coat.

Don’t be greedy is the moral of the story. I chose this tale because the story reminds me of real life. Often people underestimate and become greedy which gets them into trouble. To create this comic I needed to use a really unique app called Comic Life 3. You can use different fonts, shapes, backgrounds and much more. The only problem with the app was that you had to squish every picture in so the pictures would fit on the page. Once we fixed that we printed them. The Wonders of Art

 

 

 

 

This is one of my creations I made in Art. One thing I love about Art is the wide variety of things you’re allowed to draw. For Art we are currently building mugs out of clay. The coolest part is how we can attach any animal we want to the mug. A zebra, a cow, a mouse, a spider, a whale, a duck, so many possibilities. In Art sometimes we browse other work that has been created by classmates. My favorite project so far has to be making mugs. Using clay is fun but it can be very tricky.I know I’m not Pablo Picasso but that is okay.

One thing I’ve learned in Art is you don’t have to be awesome at it. One other big thing about Art is that you have to keep practicing it if you want to be a Pablo Picasso. Some people are born with artistic talent. I was not. I encourage anyone to get into Art because it is fun and you can meet awesome people through it. I could go on forever but my message was just to display my feelings about Art. I hope you have an awesome day!!!

My Habit

 

 

 

 

Compound effect is an effect which has an influence over time. This can be displayed by committing to doing something every day. My sixth grade Language Arts class had this habit. We would plank from September 13, 2021 to November 23, 2021. We started out doing a plank exercise  for 30 seconds and at the end we planked for 3 minutes. Each week we added 15 seconds to our planking time to make it harder. The compound effect was really visible once we started to plank for two minutes. You would want to stop but you had to push through it. One thing that heavily impacted my progress for planking was forgetting to do it. One day I missed planking and it ended up making the next day way harder. It’s like when you’re building a house out of toy blocks. Every time you plank a day you add a block. In the end of the challenge you should have a house, but if you miss a day your house could have some missing blocks or end up falling down. 

Every week that passed showed me how determined you have to be to plank every day. You have to nail it into your head or write it down so you wont forget to do it. We had a tracker for planking so we could record the days we would plank. If we successfully planked we would color the day in. If we missed the day we would leave it blank. I realized that the more you didn’t want to plank, the later you would do it. This would make you end up with a blank day in your planner.

There was one challenge that I had to overcome. This was remembering to plank. I don’t like to write things down, but writing things down helps me to remember to do things. The first week I did horrible on keeping track of planking. As I went on with planking I got better at writing things down and remembering to do it every day, even on Saturdays and Sundays. I can’t promise my family understood why I was doing a plank challenge for Language Arts. One thing was for sure, I overcame this challenge. 

To ball up all my benefits, my opinions on progress, and feelings of this challenge, this ball would be filled with more knowledge, understanding of compound effects, and having a very good feeling about both my benefits and your  progress. To be honest I am sad that the challenge is over. I felt like I did not reach my maximum potential. My last plank ended up being one minute and thirty seconds. This was a huge let down for me. I knew why I only got to one minute thirty seconds. One very big problem I also had was giving up in the heat of battle. I would be almost finished with the plank and I think I couldn’t go on. I have had times when I pulled through and got a better time, but one challenge I never overcame was giving up too easily.

After the plank challenge we had to choose a new habit. I chose reading. This one might not seem exciting or very hard, but I am hoping after I explain with these reasons you will understand why I chose reading. I don’t read that much outside of school, to be honest I actually like to read, and reading can help so many key things in life so why not read for a habit.

A Window or a Mirror?


One of the newest books I am currently reading is Fire. I am going to talk about if it is a window or a mirror. My opinion might differ from yours, but personally I think it is a window.  It isn’t a mirror because I can’t relate to a magical child in any way. When I first started reading Fire I was swept into a dashing wondrous land which filled me with wonder about magical animals and beasts. The coolest thing is that sometimes the beasts can baffle you with their appearance, and soon a cute little animal like a bunny will soon try to hurt you. This is why it can’t be a mirror for me. It is too magical and too fictional. 

 

My Backpack in a Storm

 

Before I talk about my backpack, I want to talk about the book Finding Someplace. This book is about a girl named Reesie who got stuck in hurricane Katrina and faced the consequences. Reese’s birthday was also near Katrina’s burst of damage and Reesie fought to keep hope she would be okay. Reesie took a backpack before Katrina started, she darted some important things into her bag. For example, very important items involving money for college. I would bring an item involving money as well. For example, a wallet. That is the first thing I would bring. Money is a very important thing to bring while in a storm if you want to afford food and water.

 

The rest of the things I would bring would be a water bottle because every animal on earth ( including humans ) needs water to survive. I would take a sound machine just in case we have electricity, and plus I wouldn’t want to lose it in the storm. Another key thing I would bring must be deodorant. I think it is pretty explanatory why I would bring deodorant. A phone is a great tool because if I need to keep touch with family I could use my phone. There are many other uses for a phone in a hurricane but the list could be endless. This is just for me but I cannot sleep without a stuffed animal. me and Reesie’s backpacks are pretty different. Although I bet everyone would take different things anyway.
